Encountering Chinatown Through Theatre With Drama Box

Being a long time tenant in Chinatown, Drama Box has always been curious and keen to better understand our neighbours and the environment that we are in. This talk will share reflections and discoveries of heritage, people and spaces that we have encountered during our creative journey of designing a theatrical experience to reflect the lives and stories of the community in Chinatown. This process has taken us to meet people from all walks of life associated with Chinatown, and encountered individuals, brands, and legacies, culminating ina promenade theatre, Chinatown Crossings, where stories of the old and new of Kreta Ayer will be explored.

About the speaker: Koh Hui Ling is a theatre practitioner who finds meaning in the process of community engagement and the participation of non-artists in the art-making, evident in her works such as IgnorLAND of its Time (2014) and IgnorLAND of its Loss (2016). Her desire to create alternative avenues for public dialogue has led to the development of GoLi – The Moving Theatre, Singapore’s first inflatable moving theatre that transforms spaces into vibrant places for arts and culture. She oversees the development of Drama Box’s youth engagement work and has developed a set of Drama-in-Education and Theatre-in-Education programmes for youths, teachers and adult-learners. Recognised for her contribution to community, youth and culture, Hui Ling was given the Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council Singapore, and the Singapore Youth Award by the National Youth Council in 2013, and the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World Award (Singapore) by the Junior Chamber International in 2015.
